Brief introduction

This documentary reproduces the legendary story of Pearl Buck, an American female writer, through a fragmented and stream of consciousness narration style. As the daughter of American missionary Sai Zhaoxiang, she came to China by boat at the end of the 19th century and grew up in Zhenjiang. Having lived in Jiangsu and Anhui for nearly 40 years, she named herself the daughter of Zhenjiang, and the daughter of China. Nurtured by the spirits of Confucianism and Western civilization,Pearl Buck is a hybrid wandering in between the Oriental and Western worlds, both geographically and spiritually. These unique experiences render her distinctive spirit as an individual and a writer, in which she incorporated into every one of her literary masterpieces. Though a solitary pursuit, her empathy and desire for connection obligated her to actively engage in the real world .With the deep love of humanitarianism, she remained closely attached to the land where she grew up. Almost all of her works are related to her oriental homeland, which are not only limited to big cities, but also deeply concerns the small villages and lives of the unprivileged. Her famous trilogy 'The Good Earth', illustrating the farmer’s life in northern Anhui, had won her the Nobel Prize. Moreover, she is the first person who translated “Water Margin” and introduced the book to the Western world, making her an exceptionally influential figure who gave Westerners a rare insight into the subtleties of the oriental world.
