Call for Entries | The 4th CMEFF

CMEFF Chinese Music Ethnographic Film Festival & International Music Ethnographic Film Exhibition focusing on traditional music heritage, music performance and contemporary music life in China and the Chinese-speaking region. The fourth edition will be held from July 16-20, 2025 at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. As an important biennial video cultural event, CMEFF has been committed to promoting academic exchanges and creative practices in the fields of musicology, anthropology and video since its inception.

April 30, 2025

 

 

 

Eligibility

 

Teachers and students of music universities at home and abroad, as well as social film and television organizations, groups and individuals.

 

 

 

Requirements

 

Based on fieldwork and ethnomusicology (music anthropology) research, documentaries that present Chinese music and its rich and varied manifestations, including folklore, rituals, and the world of music in contemporary social life, as well as objective records, interpretations of meanings, scholarly explorations, and intercultural exchanges and understandings.

 

This film festival encourages and welcomes:

1. Films that utilize historical materials to revitalize music archives, including and not limited to personal memory, community memory, national memory, etc;

2. Films that focus on endangered musical genres involved in fieldwork;

3. Films targeting popular music in the Chinese language region;

4. Films that combine ethnographic work with soundscapes.

5. Films on other musical ethnographic subjects. Films must be no longer than 150 minutes in length, have any type of filming equipment, have a resolution of at least 1080p, be no more than 5GB each, and each person is limited to submitting two works.

 

 

 

Submission Channel

 

Each applicant is required to submit his/her film by 24:00 on April 30, 2025 to cmeff@foxmail.com Please indicate the applicant's name and the title of the film in the subject line of the email, and include the completed application form and the link to the film in the email. Only online submissions will be accepted.
